This is a summary of the actions of the Oak Park and River Forest High School Board of Education at its last meeting on Thursday, February 25, 1999.
 
 
Recognition The Board recognized Mr. Richard Arcieri who will be inducted into the 1999 Illinois Coaches Hall of Fame on April 10, 1999
 
Board
Actions
  • approved the consent items: minutes of January 16, January 21, January 26, January 27, and January 28, 1999; personnel recommendations; FDSE actions; and financial reports; 
  • adopted the rules and regulations as presented in the General Catalog;
  • certified sixteen students as mid-year graduates as of January 22, 1999;
  • approved the following textbooks for the divisions as indicated; History Division—Citizen Soldiers, reviewed by Mr. Bruner and Nelson Mandela: The Struggle is My Life, reviewed by Mr. McCulloh
  • amended Policy 4220 Retirement Benefits—Non-certified Professionals and Managers as presented;
  • approved a request for sabbatical leave from Kathy Gargiulo for the 1999-2000 school year;
  • authorized W. F. Gurrie to conduct the audit for the fiscal year 1999;
  • authorized the FY’00 Tentative Budget to be prepared and placed on display July 26, 1999 and to see that all public notices regarding the tentative budget are published in the Oak Leaves and Wednesday Journal;
  • accepted the health insurance proposal from United Health Care;
  • approved the resolution to support District 97’s referendum as presented;
  • accepted with gratitude from a donation of a 1989 2 door Acura Integra, VIN # JD4DA3452KS009777 to the Auto Shop in the Technology Department from Ms. Dolores Goldman; and Lionel Trains rolling stock auctioned for cash ($768)--the proceeds to be used for the auditorium from R. J. Mike Nielsen; 
  • approved the Dr. Bridge’s superintendent contract as presented; and 
  • expelled student EXP 2/25/99-16 for the remainder of the 1998-99 school year but held the expulsion in abeyance contingent upon completion of enrollment and regular attendance in an Ombudsman program for the remainder of the 1998-99 school year; in counseling via the school’s Community Support staff; and meet with the Safe Schools Coordinator regarding goal-setting and job placement

Reports Superintendent’s Report—Dr. Offermann reported that a computer survey done by Don Vogel reported that 94.7% of the Oak Park and River Forest High students’ homes have computers and 84.2% have internet connections; the PTO benefit is Friday, February 26, 1999; Dr. Offermann participated in the National Conference on Education in New Orleans and listened to, among others, speaker Bill Gates of Microsoft; the National Consortium Initiative (a group of school districts that has a passion to make a difference in the achievement gap) also met in New Orleans and plans to meet again in June.

Mr. Belser gave an update on the BOSS EXCEL program.
