This is a sumary of the actions of the Oak Park and River Forest High School Board of Education at its last meeting Thursday, March 21, 2002.
 
Board
Recognition
The Board of Education 1) congratulated Business Professionals of America's State Competition Winners Will Laves who placed 2nd in the Economic Research Project, Sophy Zheng who placed 3rd in Visual Basic Programming, and Raven Sandifer and Sophy Zheng who placed 5th as a team in the Economic Research Project; 2) congratulated Chris Ledbetter on his being named IHSA's "Area Baseball Coach of the Year;" and 3) welcomed the committee members of the newly formed OPRFHS Alumni Association-Bill Sullivan, Morris Buske, and Rita Berkley Williamson.

Actions
  • approved the consent items: minutes of February 21 and 28, 2002; personnel recommendations; financial reports, and FDSE actions;
  • approved the following textbooks for the divisions as follows: World Languages-Spanish for Oral and Written Review, reviewed by Mr. Wolfman; History-The Anchor Atlas of World History, Volume I: From the Stone Age to the Eve of the French Revolution, reviewed by Mrs. Fisher; The Anchor Atlas of World History, Volume II: From the Stone Age to the Eve of the French Revolution, reviewed by Mrs. Fisher; and Mathematics-Intermediate Algebra: Concepts and Applications, reviewed by Mr. Rigas;
  • approved lifting the current ban on school-sponsored foreign travel at the start of the 2002-03 school year, contingent upon the development of a more clearly defined administrative approval process and instructed the Administration to begin updating all Board policies related to student travel;
  • approved for first reading, Policy 5114, Student Discipline;
  • accepted the Procedures for Policy 5114;
  • approved renewal of the IHSA membership by certifying that the Board of Education voted to adopt and abide by the Constitution, By-Laws, Terms and Conditions, and Administrative Procedures, Guidelines and Policies of the Association for the 2002-03 school year;
  • approved the resolution for canvassing and declaring the result of the General Primary Election held on March 19, 2002 with respect to the public question submitted to the votes in Consolidated High School District Number 200, Cook County, Illinois to determine whether to increase the tax rate for educational purposes;
  • approved the Resolution Authorizing NOTICE OF DISMISSAL of Probationary Teachers as presented;
  • approved the appointment of Cheryl Witham as the new Chief Financial Officer effective July 1, 2002;
  • approved the revision to the 2002-03 school calendar as presented, noting that summer school would begin on Monday, June 16, 2003;
  • approved the preliminary 2003-04 School Calendar as presented;
  • approved the issuance of Certificates of Attendance to foreign exchange students who are in good standing; and
  • elected Regina Kwan Peterson as President, Nancy A. Leavy as Vice President, and Valerie J. Fisher as Secretary of the Board of Education for one-year terms.
Reports

Mrs. Bennett reported on OPRFHS's receipt of a $100,000 Achievement Research Initiatives Grant from State Senator Kimberly A. Lightford. This grant comes through the Funds for Illinois' Future. This funding will be used to move forward with several projects which were begun through the ISBE Goals 2000 Grant. In addition, OPRFHS received $25,000 from State Representative Karen Yarbrough to support the completion of the African-American Achievement Research Study.

Mr. Edgecombe presented next year's plans of certified personnel currently on leave and the list of probationary teachers who will not be offered a contract for the 2002-03 school year. Mr. Lanenga presented the second semester class size and teacher load statistics for the 2001-02 school year.
