This is a sumary of the actions of the Oak Park and River Forest High School Board of Education at its last meeting on Thursday, May 25, 2000.
 
     
Board
Actions
  • approved the consent items: minutes of April 20, 27, and May 10, 2000; declared the closed minutes from November 1999 to May 2000 to remain closed; personnel recommendations; financial reports; and FDSE actions; 
  • approved the textbook Multi-Cultural Voices for the Special Education Division, reviewed by Mrs. Leavy;
  • amended Policy 5141, Physical Examination and Immunizations, and Policy 6220, Tutoring and Therapy;
  • approved Policy 6160, Academic Honesty, for first reading;
  • accepted with gratitude from Ms. Phyllis B. Rubin two white floor-length dresses; and from Ms. I.R. Oliver, one white floor-length dress; and from Donna and Bill Barrows, a reference book;
  • renewed the dental insurance with Delta Dental from 7/1/00 through 6/30/01;
  • approved Fortis as the Life Insurance Company at a premium rate of $.25/1000 salary and Fortis as the Long-Term Disability Insurance at a rate of $.12;
  • renewed the medical contract with Blue Cross/Blue Shield as presented;
  • approved the student fees for the 2000-01 school year as presented;
  • adopted the resolution and application for building permit as presented;
  • approved the appointment of the Citizens’ Council members for the 2000-01 school year;
  • approved the requests for names and address labels of graduating seniors and a list of valedictorians by Congressman Danny Davis, State Senator Kimberly A. Lightford, and Governor Ryan.
  • approved a change of the 2000-01 school calendar reflecting the date of the graduation from Thursday, June 7, to Sunday, June 10, 2001 at 3:00 p.m.
  • approved the 2001-02 school calendar;
  • approved the August 24, 2000 and the January 22, 2001 Institute Days and submission to the Regional Superintendent of Education for approval; and 
  • upheld the suspension of one student for the remainder of the semester, allow the student to take final exams outside the normal school day, and expelled that student for summer school and semester one of the 2000-01 school year but hold the expulsion in abeyance contingent upon completion of the enrollment and regular attendance in an Ombudsman program for the first semester of the 2000-01 school year. Upon the student’s return to school, the student must have a minimum of three certifiable counseling sessions and contact the school’s Community Support Staff for counseling services.

Reports Dr. Bridge reported on 1) the Special Olympics at Hinsdale High School on May 17, where out of the 10 participating students, Jermaine Dawkins received a 2nd place medal for the 50- yard dash and a 3rd place medal in long jump; 2) the first “Students of the Quarter” Award Breakfast; 3) ACT-SO competition; 4) Student Recognition Convocation where 811 students were honored on May 16; 5) the Senior Honor Convocation; 6) the Frank Lloyd Wright Competition; 7) the Memorial Day Assembly, 8) the Water Polo Team’s second place in State; 9) the PROM on Saturday, May 27; and 10) the Joint Study Committee on Student Behavior and Discipline.
  
Mrs. Bennett reported on Triton’s Spring Evening School and the Consortium for Educational Change’s activities.  Dr. Danes reported on the Joint Study Committee on Evaluations.  Mr. Sye reported on commencement plans.

Board members volunteered to review the following textbooks for the following Divisions— Special Education, AGS Earth Science, to be reviewed by Mrs. Fisher; Mathematics Division—Algebra 2 An Integrated Approach, to be reviewed by Mrs. Peterson; Science Division—Addison-Wesley Chemistry, to be reviewed by Mrs. Peterson; History Division—World History, to be reviewed by Mrs. Lucchesi, Global History—The Growth of Civilizations, to be reviewed by Mrs. Lucchesi, and African American Odyssey, to be reviewed by Mrs. Leavy; Foreign Language Division—AP French, to be reviewed by Mr. Stewart; How to Prepare for the Advanced Placement Exam, to be reviewed by Mr. Bruner, and Vergil’s Aeneid, Books I-VI, to be reviewed by Mr. Bruner
