This is a summary of the actions of the Oak Park and River Forest High School Board of Education at its last meeting on Thursday, August 22, 1996. Board Members are President William R. Cragg, Vice President Chester L. Stewart, Secretary Stephen C. Bruner, Gerard M. Jacobs, Nancy Leavy, John R. McCulloh, and Regina Kwan Peterson.

Actions:
  • approved consent items: minutes of June 27, July 17, 24, 27, and August 7; personnel recommendations; finmancial reports; and FDSE actions for July and August;

  • ratified the Board of Education Goals for 1996-97;
  • approved placement of the District 200 and FDSE 1996-97 Tentative Budgets on public display as of August 23, 1996;
  • authorized resolutions to transfer $800,000 for the month of June and $2,000,000 for the month of July from the Working Cash Fund to the Education Fund;
  • accepted with gratitude an Olympic-size weight set and squat cage donated by Takayoski Matsuda to the Athletic Department;
  • approved the following textbooks for use in the English Division: Advanced Reading Skills, reviewed by Mrs. Leavy; Conflicts: 15 Masterpieces of Struggle and Conflict, reviewed by Mr. Bruner; Vocabulary Connections: A Content Area Approach, reviewed by Mr. Cragg; Waitingfor the Rain, reviewed by Mrs. Peterson; and Gifted Hands, reviewed by Mr. Stewart;
  • renewed the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) contract with the Behavioral Health Service Division of Central DuPage Health System on a fee-for-service basis at no increase in rates;
  • adopted Policy 1240, Use of Technology, with a minor correction, and amended Policy 4144, ce, as presented; and
  • adopted the Code of Conduct for 1996-97 as presented.
Reports

    The Superintendent reported: that athletic teams have begun practicing, Deans returned August 21, Division Heads will return on August 26, faculty returns on August 30; and students return on September 3; ACT and SAT scores are the highest in the history of OPRFHS, and IGAP scores are fairly stable with a decrease in reading scores (possibly because of the test as evidenced by talking to other districts with similar results); a Task Force from Chicago dealing with restructuring of education has begun meeting with OPRFHS administrators to obtain ideas; and the $500 in grant funds, earned by Amanda Klonsky as a member of the 1996 Future Leaders of America Program, will be used by the OPRFHS Service Club for their various projects. Don Vogel reported on Summer School 1996 and the Technology project. Scott Hellen, Transitional Counselor of the Department of Rehabilitation, and Diane Booth, Job Coach, explained the Oak Park Hospital Work Experience Program. Dr. Lebrecht presented Fund Balances as of June 30 and July 31, 1996 and showed how closely the FY97 Tentative Budget tracks the Financial Model in revenue and expenditures. Mr. Sye spoke about the College Transcript Summary; reported on Advanced Placement examinations; and presented the Ombudsman Report.
