This is a summary of the actions of the Oak Park and River Forest High School Board of Education at its last meeting on Thursday, August 27, 1998.
Recognition
  • The Board recognized National FHA HERO gold medal award winners ‘98 graduate Eli Rozsypal for Interpersonal Communications, junior Quiana McJunkins for Job Interview and senior Nathan Will for Food Service; the Sam’s Club’s Teacher of the Year Award Doug Belpedio nominated by one of his students; and Studio 200 and International Thespian Society for receiving the Viet NOW’s Presidential Award for their performance of "A Place in the Heart."
Board Actions
  • approved the consent items: minutes of June 18, June 25, July 16, August 10, and August 17, 1998, personnel recommendations; financial reports; and FDSE actions;
  • adopted the Code of Conduct for 1998-99;
  • renewed the EAP Contract with Linden Oaks for 1998-99;
  • approved the following textbooks: Applied Arts Division—From School to Work, reviewed by Mr. Stewart; English Division—Emma, reviewed by Mrs. Fisher; History Division—The Autobiography & Other Writings, reviewed by Mr. Bruner and With Malice Toward None: A Life of Abraham Lincoln, reviewed by Mrs. Fisher; Mathematics Division—A Computer Science Tapestry, reviewed by Mr. Stewart; Foreign Language Division—Ven Conmigo 3, reviewed by Mr. McCulloh, Workbook in Spanish Two Years, reviewed by Mr. Jacobs and Convocacion de palabras, reviewed by Mr. McCulloh; Special Education Division—English for the World of Work, reviewed by Mrs. Leavy and Basic Math Skills, reviewed by Mrs. Peterson;
  • ratified the Board of Education Goals for 1998-99;
  • adopted the FY ’99 Budget for District 200 and FDSE;
  • accepted with gratitude a donation from Mr. & Mrs. Sam Chan Suee in honor of Mr. & Mrs. Si-Tao Chan, a ceramic; 
  • adopted Policy 6131, Objections to Materials in Library Collection; and amended Policy 6134, Instructional Materials and Policy 6400, Instructional and Recreational Support Materials; and
  • adopted the Oak Park and River Forest High School Census 2000 Report Proclamation.
Reports Superintendent’s Report: Dr. Offermann announced the beginning of the school’s 126th year and the 100th year anniversary of the library; the school’s present enrollment is 2779 with 2710 being the anticipated official enrollment; the retirement of Administrator Dr. Frank Danes and the resignation of Administrator Dr. Suzanne Casey as of June 30, 1999; the winning of the Technology Literacy Challenge Grant in the amount of $135,000 written by faculty member Bob McBride; Fermilab’s ARISE Grant in the amount of $32,000; and the following academic outcomes:  
    ACT 23.7 (the highest score in the history of Oak Park and River Forest High School) 
    SAT 1202 (the highest score in the history of Oak Park and River Forest High School) 
    IGAP (relatively the same as last year in the various categories)
Rev. Dr. M. Randolph Thompson summarized the Parent Focus Group sessions; Mr. Vogel reported on summer school; Dr. Casey delivered data regarding the Academy programs; Mr. Sye gave a preliminary report on the Climate Surveys, presented the college transcript summary, the Ombudsman Report, and the Student Absence Statistics for 1997-98; and Mr. Wiggins and Mr. Perna gave a discipline summary report for the 1997-98 school year.   

The Board Members reported on their various Board Committee and liaison representative responsibilities.
