Reports  The Superintendent reported: the first day of school would be August 29; an Institute Day Program was held earlier that day for faculty and staff; 2,728 students are currently enrolled—661 freshmen, 668 sophomores, 690 juniors and 709 seniors with a backlog of 70 registrations that have not yet cleared residency; after a sabbatical leave to study drama, faculty member Paul Noble is starring in David Mamet’s play entitled "Oleanna," and everyone is invited to see it; there was an all-time high number of 22 semi-finalists in the National Merit competition for the class of 1998; the ACT score was 23.3, the highest in the school’s history.

Dr. Stephen E. Lebrecht reported that the construction in the high school would be finished by the September 2 contractual completion date and he is happy with the results. He noted that alternative rooms might be used the first day of school, August 29. This work was equivalent togutting seven homes and then rebuilding them in 10 weeks or redoing about 20 kitchens. This has been a major undertaking.

A video of last year’s state championship winners of the 4X200 girls’ relay race was shown.

Mr. Donald Vogel submitted the summer school report which highlighted some of the successful academic programs, detailed the enrollment and financial statistics and made recommendations for future summer school programs.

Mr. Sye presented the Ombudsman report, the transcript summary, and the attendance statistics for the 1996-97 school year. He noted that in the Class of 1997, 87% of the graduates plan to attend college—69% to four-year colleges and 18.1% to junior colleges. A total of 534 final transcripts had been sent out. Mr. Sye also stated that the attendance statistics for 1996-97 showed the percentage of daily attendance was approximately 83% to 95% with the least daily attendance occurring during the winter months
