This is a summary of the actions of the Oak Park and River Forest High School Board of Education at its last meeting on Thursday, December 16, 1999.
     
Board
Actions
  • approved the consent items: minutes of November 9 and 17, 1999; personnel recommendations; financial reports; and FDSE actions; 
  • held a public hearing regarding calendar modification;
  • approved the proposed changes for the 2000-2001General Catalog as presented;
  • approved the 2000 Summer School Faculty Salaries, Tuition and Dates;
  • adopted the resolution relating to the estimated levies for 1999;
  • accepted with gratitude a donation of a cotton flag from Boni Jensen; a donation of a Pitney Bowes Postage Scale for Wayne Krass’ class from Mr. Charles S. Rose of the Blackstone Group; a donation of nine 3 lb. boxes of grass seed from Mr. Charles Dressel of Dressel’s ACE Hardware; and the OPRFH Scholarship Foundation received $250,000 from the Miriam B. Hotchkiss Trust;approved Policy 3450, Investment of School District Funds and Policy 5125, Graduation Requirements for first reading and action;
  • approved the Buildings and Grounds contract as presented;
  • approved the School Code Modification request which provides the option of holding classes on Abraham Lincoln’s Birthday;
  • appointed the following three individuals to the District 200 Local Ethics Commission for the 2000 calendar year—Sherlynn Reid, Robert Senechalle, and Martha Trantow; 
  • expelled one student for the remainder of first semester of the 1999-00 school year, but held the expulsion in abeyance contingent upon completion of the enrollment and regular attendance in an Ombudsman program for Semester I of the 1999-00 school year and upon student’s return proof of completion of three-to-five certifiable counseling sessions and contact with the school’s Community Support Staff is required;
  • expelled two students for the remainder of the 1999-00 school year and summer school, but held the expulsions in abeyance contingent upon completion of the enrollment and regular attendance in an Ombudsman program for the 1999-00 school year, and upon students’ return to school proof of completion of three-to-five certifiable counseling sessions and contact with the School’s Community Support Staff is required; and
  • expelled one student for the remainder of the 1999-00 school year and summer school. Upon student’s return to school, proof of completion of three-to-five certifiable counseling sessions and contact with the Community Support Staff of the school is required.

Reports Superintendent’s Report—Dr. Susan Bridge reported that at the November 10 Parent Conference Day, almost 5,000 conferences were held representing 1,100 individual students. Additional conference time has been scheduled for the evening of March 2 for those parents unable to attend before or whose students have different courses second semester.

Dr. Bridge reported that a new proxy server, hardware and software were installed which can track the time and address of Internet websites.  Additional content filters were also installed to block hate sites on the web. 

Mrs. Mary Bennett will represent the high school in its participation of the Minority Student Achievement Network at the College Board in NYC January 13-15. 

The high school initiated a new Teacher Grant Program to allow for additional opportunities in professional development, which will result in new programs and enhanced instructional skills.

Dr. Bridge reported that 121 student were honored at the Human Relations Award breakfast, 14 students had been named as all-state musicians, and 73 students were named as AP scholars.

Webmaster Mary Ann Gini and Assistant Webmaster Tom Cieplak were honored by the Illinois Computer Educators for the following websites 1) Oak Park and River Forest High School’s Homepage, 2) Huskie Den, and 3) a curriculum page on genetic diseases.

Dr. Bridge reported that figure skater Logan Giulietti-Schmitt placed fourth in the U.S. Figure Skating Competition which qualified him for the Junior National Championship.  Partners Alexis Hoffstadter and Lucas Vriner and placed second at the US Figure Skating Competition in the 23-state competition which qualified them for the National Figure Skating Competition.

Mr. Sye gave an update on the proposal for an alternative school and the Critical Response Plan.

The Board Members reported on their various Board committee and liaison representative responsibilities.
