This is a sumary of the actions of the Oak Park and River Forest High School Board of Education at its last meeting on Thursday, June 22, 2000.
 
Recognition The Board recognized and commended the Girls’ Water Polo Team on its second place win in state competition
 
Board
Actions
  • approved the consent items: minutes of May 25, June 1, June 15, 2000; personnel recommendations; financial reports; and FDSE actions; 
  • approved the textbooks for the divisions as follows: Special Education, AGS Earth Science, reviewed by Mrs. Fisher; Mathematics Division—Algebra 2 An Integrated Approach, reviewed by Mrs. Peterson; Science Division—Addison-Wesley Chemistry, reviewed by Mrs. Peterson; Visual Basic 6.0, reviewed by Mr. McCulloh; History Division—World History and Global History—The Growth of Civilizations, both reviewed by Mrs. Lucchesi; and African American Odyssey, reviewed by Mrs. Leavy; Foreign Language Division—AP French—How to Prepare for the Advanced Placement Exam, reviewed by Mr. Stewart; AP Spanish—How to Prepare for the Advanced Placement Exam, reviewed by Mr. Bruner, and Vergil’s Aeneid, Books I-VI, reviewed by Mr. Bruner;
  • amended Policy 6160, Academic Honesty;
  • accepted with gratitude from SAAB Cars USA, Mr. Joel Manby, a $100 donation to the Jazz Band; and from Mr. Williams Irons from the Buildings and Grounds Department a gift of a sidewalk snowblower;
  • renewed the Liability Umbrella Insurance and School Board Legal Insurance through Collective Liability Insurance Cooperative (CLIC) administered through AON Risk Resources Insurance Agency, Inc.;
  • approved the resolution to determine the Prevailing Wage Rates for laborers and outside contractors in Cook County and to place a notice in the Oak Leaves regarding the Prevailing Wages and to serve notice as necessary that the wages are effective for the 2000-01 school year;
  • renewed the Workers’ Compensation Insurance with School Employees Lost Fund for the 2000-01 school year;
  • approved the transfer of excess funds as a result of interest income from the Bond and Interest Fund to the Operation and Maintenance Fund;
  • authorized the resolution to transfer a total of $500,000 from the Working Cash Fund to the Education Fund;
  • approved District 200 Budget for FY ’01 and the FDSE Tentative Budget to be presented for public display on July 24, 2000;
  • approved a student user fee for sports participation to be set at $25 per season;
  • renewed the transportation contract with Laidlaw;
  • approved the annual appointments of Division Heads, Dean Counselors, Deans of Discipline; and Athletic Director for 2000-01;
  • approved the stipended positions and assignments for 2000-01;
  • approved the appointment of Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Support Services, Donna Stringer Stevens;
  • approved the Administrators’ Continuing Education Plans as presented;
  • approved the Administrators’ contracts for FY 01 as presented;
  • certified the 579 graduates of the Class of 2000; and
  • approved the 2000 Tradition of Excellence Award Recipients as recommended by the Tradition of Excellence Selection Committee.
     
Reports Dr. Bridge reported on 1) on the Student Leadership Conference for 65 students from Districts 90, 97, 200, Evanston Township High School, and District 65 hosted by Oak Park and River Forest High School which is a prototype to the national one to be held in October in Shaker Heights, Ohio sponsored by the Minority Student Achievement Network (MSAN) 15 participating school districts; 2) student Daniel Keys on obtaining a perfect ACT score; and 3) conversations with Districts 90 and 97 regarding standardization of residency requirements among the three districts.  Dr. Bridge bid adieu to Dr. Danes as this was his last Board meeting before retirement on June 30, and introduced Mr. Jason Edgecombe, Dr. Danes’ replacement, to the Board.

Mrs. Bennett reported on the FY ’01 Goals 2000 Grant award in the amount of $259,890 to be used for the School Improvement Plan initiatives; Dr. Danes presented the Faculty Attendance Data for 1999-00; Mr. Wiggins and Mr. Perna presented the Discipline Study; and Dr. Lebrecht reported on the distribution of proceeds from the art auction.

Board members volunteered to review the following textbooks for the following English 
Assignment  Division—The Inferno, to be reviewed by Mr. Bruner; and The Color of Water, to be reviewed by Mrs. Lucchesi.
