Newscene began in 1980 as a special feature on our
homecoming activities. It first aired live from our own studio but with
Cablevision equipment used to produce a live, call-in homework help show on
cable. When the help show moved to the Cablevision studio we ran Newscene live
from there. Upgrading our own studio from black and white to color gave us the
capability to tape it, as-live, at OPRF. Finally in 1985, with the installation
of a modulator, we were able to produce Newscene live from our own studio. The
show airs weekly (25 times per year) on Thursdays at 4:00pm on cable channel 19.
It is completely student-produced and staffed and is one of very few live (not
edited) high school news programs in the area. The show is cablecast from a
fully equipped three-camera studio which would rival that of many colleges. Our
students work very hard at producing a quality program.
