Beauty and the Beast

Beauty and The Beast, produced March, 2009.

Performance opportunities

At OPRFHS we offer broad opportunities to act, direct, design, and create, ranging from full-blown musicals in the large auditorium to dramas in the Little Theatre to one-act plays produced in various spaces in the school. With over a dozen different directors (student and staff) working on our stages each year, students will have a range of experiences and challenges through which they develop their creative potentials. Auditions for all productions are open to any student in the district and are widely announced approximately 6–7 weeks prior to performance date.

Mainstages: Four shows each year are produced in the Little Theatre—two each in the fall and spring. All students are encouraged to audition for these shows (there are no requirements other than a willingness to learn), which are selected by their directors from all types and periods of drama. Recent productions have included Absent Friends, Godspell, Tracers, Medea, Pride and Prejudice, and Rhinoceros.

Two musicals are produced each year in the Main Auditorium—one in early spring and one as part of summer school (where an academic credit is earned). These large-scale productions bring together the talents of many students, including musicians, dancers, actors, singers, and stage technicians. Recent musicals have included Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, Crazy for You, Guys and Dolls, Ragtime, Music Man, Chicago, Grease, and Hello Dolly.

Studio200: Each year senior theatre students are invited to apply to direct a full-length drama in Studio200, a unique “black box” theatre space. Student directors are chosen based on their range of theatre experience, on their interviews and the plays they propose to direct. Working closely with OPRHFS staff, these directors audition, choose a cast, and rehearse their shows for public presentation. Recent productions have included Sympathetic Magic, World Set Free, Greater Tuna, Stop Kiss, The Clean House, and Twilight of the Golds.
