8th Grade Testing for Freshman Year Course Recommendations
OPRFHS administers tests for freshman year course recommendations in English, Math, Science, History, and World Language. Eighth grade residents of Oak Park and River Forest who intend to enroll in the ninth grade year at OPRFHS are required to take the tests, except that students who take the DLM instead of PARCC typically do not take the tests.
Eigth grade testing this year will take place at OPRFHS on Saturday, October 13th, and Saturday, October 20th, 2018. For all children currently residing and attending school in Oak Park or River Forest, parents will be notified in September of their child's assigned date and time for the tests, which will include the following:
- PSAT 8/9: OPRFHS has decided to utilize the PSAT 8/9 in lieu of STAR testing due to its many benefits in helping students prepare for post-secondary success. The PSAT 8/9 will be administered in 4 sections that will assess the student’s performance in Reading, Writing and Language, and Math. More information about the PSAT 8/9 can be found at: www.psat.org/8-9.
?Benefits of the PSAT 8/9:
Overall academic improvement – the PSAT 8/9 is designed to uncover opportunities for growth and provided targeted feedback to help students improve their skills.
Students will receive feedback on their aptitude for success in AP courses – student score reports will show recommendations for AP courses that might be good matches.
A personalized study plan – after students receive their results from the PSAT 8/9 they will be provided with a custom SAT study plan that can be accessed online, anytime through Khan Academy.
?- Spanish, French, and Italian language tests. Students currently enrolled in Spanish, French, or Italian who intend to continue in the same language in high school will also take a world language placement test for that language. Other language options to begin at OPRF are Chinese, German, Japanese and Latin. No testing is required for these languages, unless your child has significant prior experience in the language. To arrange a test in a language other than Spanish, French or Italian, please call Ms. Claudia Sahagun, World Languages Division Head, at 708.434.3884.
If your family lives in Oak Park or River Forest, your child attends school outside the communities, and you plan for your child to enroll at OPRFHS as a freshman in the fall of 2018, please call the Office of Assessment and Research (708-434-3573) to get on our mailing list for testing and related communications.
OPRFHS uses the test results along with information from the 8th grade school (standardized test results, 8th grade course and grade information), as well as family input, to recommend courses in English, Math, Science, History, and World Language for the freshman year.
You and your child may find the test results useful in planning high school courses to build upon academic strengths and address areas for academic improvement.
District 200 works with staff from the middle schools to implement testing accommodations consistent with a child’s IEP or 504 Plan.
If you have any questions about the tests or the use of the test results, please contact Krystle Jones at 708.434.3373 or firstname.lastname@example.org. For questions about testing accommodations, please contact your child’s teacher or case manager at the middle school.
