At its regular meeting this evening, the Oak Park and River Forest High School District 200 School Board approved the hiring of Tod Altenburg as its new Chief Financial Officer. Altenburg, who currently serves as assistant superintendent for finance/operations at Lombard Elementary District 44 in Lombard, Ill., will assume his position with the District effective July 1, 2013.
Altenburg comes to OPRFHS with nine years’ experience in school business operations, beginning in 2004 as CFO/treasurer of McLean County Unit District No. 5 in Normal, Ill. However, his career in education dates back to 1992, when he began a five-year stint as an English and Spanish teacher at Sterling High School in Sterling, Ill. Altenburg went on to hold several roles in Sterling, including instructional technology specialist, special services coordinator, and principal of two of the district’s elementary schools.
“Tod brings a number of strengths to District 200,” said Superintendent Dr. Steven Isoye. “Through the interview process, it was impressive to learn about his history of finding efficiencies that reduce costs while keeping cuts away from the classroom, as well as his ability to clearly communicate complex financial issues. His passion for education is evident, and he has an extremely strong sense of how fiscal decision making affects the most important people in the District—our students—because of his work in the classroom.” In addition, Altenburg oversaw facilities planning and the construction of a $1.2 million new school building in District 44, experience that will be essential as OPRFHS continues long-term planning to address increasing enrollment and its aging facilities.
Altenburg, whose contract includes a base salary of $168,000, will replace current Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations Cheryl Witham. Witham announced in February that she had accepted the position of assistant superintendent for finance and operations with New Trier Township High School District 203, effective July 1.
