Oak Park and River Forest High School is proud to announce that three of its students have placed as National Achievement Scholarship semifinalists in the 2013-2014 program, which is sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. The high school’s semifinalists this year are: Christina Harrington, Hannah Jacobs-El, and Justin Sapp. Semifinalists in this competition represent roughly 1 percent of the Black American high school students who requested consideration for the program when they took the 2012 PSAT. From the roughly 1,600 semifinalists, about 1,300 are expected to advance to the finalist level, where they will compete for approximately 800 scholarship awards.
In addition, Gabriel Matesanz and Luisa Vasquez earned National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP) awards and Alexandra Barcia received an NHRP Honorable Mention award, placing all three among the top 2 percent of Hispanic/Latino students taking the 2012 PSAT. Although NHRP does not provide monetary awards, being named is a significant academic achievement. This year, the NHRP is recognizing about 5,300 Hispanic/Latino students from a pool of more than 259,000 who took the 2012 PSAT.
