Information about semester 1 final exams

December 2, 2015

December 3, 2015

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As a gentle reminder, first-semester final exams will be held just prior to Winter Break.  We moved to this model several years ago as a response to requests from families and students who have long told us that it is difficult for students to fully relax and decompress over break when they have final exams looming upon their return.

Please be sure to read the following information, so you and your student are well prepared for this important time.

General Information
Following the completion of the quarter grading period on December 15, 2015, final examinations will be given Wednesday through Friday, December 16-18, 2015.

During the three examination days, there will be no regular schedule of classes.  Instead, classes will meet for examinations according to the following schedule:

Bell Schedule

Wed., Dec. 16

Thurs., Dec. 17

Fri., Dec. 18

8:30  - 10:00 a.m.

1st period class

2nd period class

3rd period class

10:15 - 11:45 a.m.

7th period class

8th period class

6th period class

12:00 - 1:30 p.m.

4th period class

5th period class

For this schedule to work, students must be conscientious about taking their exams at the scheduled time. They also must be courteous and refrain from doing anything that would disturb classes during the examination periods. Please remind your student of our testing expectations:

  • We expect all of our students to attend final exams during the scheduled time. If a student is unable to attend an exam, he or she must contact the teacher and plan to take the exam during the makeup exam period.  Final exams will not be given before our Final Exam week.
  • Students with three exams scheduled on the same day need to take all of their exams during the scheduled time. The makeup day is for prearranged makeup examinations only.
  • Students must remain in the testing room for the entire 90 minutes, even if they complete their examinations early.  Early dismissal of students would compromise the quiet testing atmosphere.
  • Students are not allowed in the corridors during testing periods except as noted in the next item, or unless they have a signed appointment slip designating a time and place for a meeting with a teacher.
  • Students who are not more than 10 minutes tardy to a testing period will be sent directly to their testing rooms by Safety and Support Team members. Students who are more than 10 minutes tardy to a testing period will be sent to the South Cafeteria, to the Bookstore if they have business to conduct there, or out of the building until the testing period is over. Students who are more than 10 minutes tardy must schedule a makeup exam (see next item).
  • If a student misses a scheduled exam, the student must contact the teacher immediately and plan to make up the exam during the makeup exam period, on Friday, December 18, from 12:00 – 1:30 p.m. If a student is unable to reach the teacher, he or she should contact the Division Head.

Grade Reporting
Teachers are encouraged to post failing grades as early as possible during Final Exam week to make the best use of available time before the winter break for conversations with and among students, parents, and counselors.  Parents and/or guardians of students receiving a failing grade or an incomplete grade will be contacted by teachers no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, December 18th.  All other 2nd Quarter and Final Semester grades will be posted and accessible via Skyward by Thursday, January 7, 2016.

Second Semester
Classes resume, and second semester begins, on Tuesday, January 5, 2016. We hope that having exams before winter break will allow your student(s) to return feeling renewed and ready to fully re-engage in their coursework and activities at this time.
