OPRF’s first home football game this Friday, August 24, against Fenger, will include a special halftime ceremony to honor Eric Kumerow, class of 1983, and retire his jersey, number 14.
Mr. Kumerow was named football player of the year by the Chicago Tribune in 1982 and was selected to the all-state football team in 1982 and the all-state basketball team in 1983. He went on to play football for The Ohio State University in 1986 and 1987, and was a first-round NFL draft pick in 1988.
Mr. Kumerow played for the Miami Dolphins, where he was coached by Don Shula, from 1988-1990, and for the Chicago Bears, where he was coached by Mike Ditka, in 1991. He retired from the NFL due to an Achilles injury in 1992. These days, he lives in Bartlett, Ill., with his wife, Tammi, and their four children, who all play sports themselves.
