Guidance Counselors

Guidance Counselors are certified personnel who advocate for students, families, and staff in issues related primarily to student academic performance. Students are encouraged to seek more than advisory assistance from their guidance counselor in order to resolve a situation, solve a problem, or reach an appropriate decision. The counseling process, which is both confidential and goal directed, is a learning process for students so they will know that they have choices, can act on their choices, must want to take responsibility for their actions, and can solve their own problems. As members of the PSST, they promote and support students’ academic and social success by providing specialized services such as:

· Class scheduling;

· Career exploration/counseling;

· Academic support and counseling (organization, study skills, test prep., learning styles, etc.);

· College counseling;

· Collection of assignments related to suspensions or short term absences due to illness;

· Liaison to college and military representatives;

· Section 504 Case Management;

· NCAA eligibility;

· Support for students who are homeless, in foster care, or wards of the state;

· School application of court orders / restraining orders / custodial rights;

· GED services;

· Referral to Homebound / Hospital Services;

· Transportation;

· Connections to ELL services and programs;

· Home schooled credit issues;

· Correspondence / on-line credits;

· Summer Programs (including financial assistance);

· College financial aid and scholarships;

· Temporary and permanent record maintenance;

· Health and Medical Referrals;

· Personal goal setting with students.
