Hadestown Teen Edition Brings Broadway Ambition to the Little Theater Stage

Under the direction of Michelle Bayer, OPRF’s fall musical Hadestown Teen Edition is set to dazzle audiences with its powerful storytelling, dynamic music, and striking visual design.

“This show is nonstop music, with 37 songs woven throughout,” Bayer says. “We knew we had to start early.” Auditions began at the start of the school year, with 85 students vying for 23 roles. From there, the cast committed to months of rehearsals, including daily sessions starting in October. The result: a high-level production that rivals professional theater.

Hadestown, inspired by Greek mythology and infused with the sounds of New Orleans jazz, tells the story of Orpheus and Eurydice through a modern lens. OPRF’s unique spin begins the moment guests enter the theater, which has been transformed into a jazz club, complete with live pre-show music.

“These musicians are phenomenal,” Bayer says. “Some of them even recruited the rest of the pit band themselves. They’re not just talented, they’re deeply committed to the artform.”

The show’s emotional weight and rich themes are resonating with students, too. “It’s a sad story, but it’s one they connect to deeply,” Bayer explains. “They’re reflecting on community, sacrifice, and love, and bringing that depth to every scene.”

The creative team has also embraced movement in new ways. The production features expanded choreography, including modern dance elements choreographed by longtime collaborator Connor Cornelius, alongside Bayer’s signature staging and blocking.

Set and lighting design, led by Kyle Hurt with technical director Chris Scholtens and a team of student builders, adds another layer of professionalism. One student, senior Ethan Cooper, has taken on the role of student technical director and lead carpenter, often staying late to perfect the set. “His dedication is incredible,” Bayer says. “It’s students like him who make this program what it is.”

Hadestown Teen Edition is more than just a high school musical; it’s a reflection of OPRF’s commitment to equity, excellence, and belonging. “Even if a student isn’t cast on stage, we find them a role backstage, in costuming, or working with props,” Bayer says. “All are welcome in our spaces.”

Performances run November 14, 15, 21, and 22 at 7 p.m. in the Little Theater. With only 350 seats per night, tickets are selling fast. “We expect to sell out,” Bayer says. “People in the community know how special this program is.”

Tickets are available online now. Don’t miss the chance to experience this powerful production and celebrate the talent, heart, and hard work of OPRF’s students.
