Freshmen preACT 9 Secure
OPRFHS has adopted the preACT 9 Secure (for freshmen) and preACT Secure (for sophomores) to create an aligned series of tests that will help prepare our students for their college admissions test. preACT Secure tests are structured in the same way and contain questions in the same content and skill areas as the ACT; the questions get more complex and address deeper knowledge and skills from the preACT 9 Secure to the preACT Secure to the ACT. This series of tests will give parents, students, and high school staff useful information about each student’s progress toward college and career readiness. The District will pay the cost of the tests in freshman and sophomore year; the state pays for testing in the junior year.
The preACT 9 Secure test date for 2024-2025 is Tuesday, April 8, 2025. No registration for the test is required.
Click here for free test prep resources.
No classes will meet on April 8, 2025, except for our TEAM program, which will meet as usual. The day will be used for school-wide testing of freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. This is a non-attendance day for seniors.
Testing will begin at 8:00 am. Students will be dismissed early from school upon the conclusion of the test. Most students will finish by 1:00 pm.
Please contact Mrs. Kimberly Asbury (kasbury@oprfhs.org) if you have any questions about the preACT 9.
Students whose accommodations allow them to listen to an audio version of the test may test over multiple days due to the length of the extended time for this accommodation. Testing for students with multiple day testing will be completed in a testing window, and students will be excused from their classes while they are completing the test.
Illinois Youth Survey
OPRFHS is working with the Center for Prevention Research and Development at the University of Illinois to conduct a survey of sophomore and senior students. The purpose of the Illinois Youth Survey is to better understand Illinois youth risk and protective behaviors as they related to student problems and academic success.
This questionnaire asks about:
- personal use of alcohol and other drugs, perception of risks, where accessed, consequences of use, approval or disapproval of use
- students' feelings about their school experience
- family and personal characteristics
- family communication about substance use
- feeling about self and moods
- student health behaviors – food intake, exercise, height and weight
More information about the survey is available at this link: https://tinyurl.com/IYS-Survey

STAR Reading and Math Assessments
What is the Renaissance Learning STAR Reading Assessment?
The STAR Reading Assessment is a computer-adaptive assessment that measures key aspects of a student’s knowledge of reading and language. Questions on this test cover 46 reading skills over five domains including: analyzing literary text, word skills and knowledge, analyzing argument and evaluating text, comprehension strategies and constructing meaning, and understanding author’s craft.
What is the Renaissance Learning STAR Math Assessment?
STAR Math is a computer-adaptive assessment that helps gauge mathematical knowledge in the areas of numbers and operations, algebra, geometry and measurement, data analysis, statistics, and probability.
What is the purpose of using STAR assessments?
The STAR assessment is used to help understand a student’s strengths and needs in reading. It helps our school monitor students on their path to College and Career Readiness and determine who may need additional support and instruction to access grade-level curriculum. Teachers may use STAR assessment data to gain insight to guide and personalize instruction. We also use the data to monitor student growth within our reading and math intervention programs.
Who takes the STAR assessment?
STAR assessments are administered to all 9th grade students three times per year (Fall, Winter, Spring). Sophomores and students in select math classes also take STAR assessments during the year. Students in our Reading program may take STAR assessments more frequently to monitor their reading progress. In addition, Math classes that continue to support the development of foundational math skills may take STAR Math assessments as well and more frequently. Each assessment is 34 questions and takes approximately 20-30 minutes to complete.
How to prepare for the STAR Assessment?
The STAR assessments require no specific preparation since they assess academic skills a student has already acquired. Students can prepare by regularly attending class, and getting a good night's sleep and breakfast before the assessment.
How can I find my student’s STAR scores?
Your student’s STAR scores can be found in Skyward Family Access. This includes the test date, Unified Scale Score, and Percentile Rank. You will also see an indicator showing how your student performed against state benchmarks, categorized as:
-
Exceeds Benchmark
-
Meets Benchmark
-
Approaching Meets Benchmark
-
Partially Meets Benchmark
-
Did Not Yet Meet Benchmark
How can I understand what the STAR score means?
STAR is a computer-adaptive test. This means that the test adjusts the difficulty of questions based on your child’s answers. If your student answers a question correctly, the next question will be harder. If they answer incorrectly, the next question will be easier.
The test results in a scaled score, ranging from 0–1400, based on the number of correct answers and the difficulty of the questions.
For the 2024–2025 school year, Renaissance updated the norms for STAR Reading and Math. As a result, your child’s scores and percentile rank may look different this year because their performance is now compared to students nationwide after the pandemic, which caused a general decline in scores. However, even if your child’s percentile rank improves, they may still not meet the Illinois State Benchmarks. These benchmarks are based on state standards, not national comparisons, and help us determine if students need extra support or enrichment.
More information about the norming study can be found here.
