Message from the superintendent

Dear OPRF Staff, Students, and Families,

As I write to you today, we are preparing to end our school year far differently than any of us expected. We’ll be live streaming our annual celebration of retirees to staff later this morning, and distributing caps and gowns and diplomas to seniors via drive-through pickup today and tomorrow. Many of us--students, families, and staff--are feeling such a mix of emotions right now, myself included. It is painful to not be able to say goodbye in person, to give hugs and individual well wishes.

Amidst the sadness, though, I also feel tremendous gratitude. To say this spring has been a challenge for all of us is an understatement. But I am so proud of the way we as a community have navigated this time together. Your commitment and the sacrifices you have had to make to do school in an entirely new way have helped protect the health and well-being of everyone in Oak Park and River Forest, not just our school community. Thank you. I am so grateful for your efforts.

What’s next?
We have not yet made any decisions regarding next school year. As I shared last week, while we await further direction from the state, we are deep into planning for various scenarios for 2020-2021. The members of our transition steering committee, Re-Imagine Education OPRF, have already held numerous brainstorming and discussion sessions with their subcommittees. As planning progresses, we will be seeking stakeholder input and keeping you updated to ensure that we are ready for a safe and equitable return to school in fall. Whatever happens, the district will be prepared.

Pickup/drop-off for grades 9-11
We are still finalizing the plan for our underclassmen to return textbooks and pick up belongings they may need over the summer. We will be sending out details very soon, so please stay tuned.

Summer meals
For any student in need, we will continue weekly distribution of seven breakfasts and seven lunches, except for June 22. On that day, we will distribute nine of each meal to carry students through June 30.  We do not know if we will be serving meals in July/August yet and will keep you posted.

Meal distribution takes place on Mondays, June 1, 8, 15, and 22, from 11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Please pick up from the Scoville Avenue side of the building. We’ll be located at a tent outside the Special Education entrance (just north of the main entrance), by the bus lane.

Please take care of yourselves. May you have a safe and healthy summer.
